My name is Christopher Madan, and I am an assistant professor at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. I study an array of topics, including memory, affect, decisions, aging and neuroimaging. Progressing from an undergraduate research assistant to a faculty position has taken me through academic systems in Canada, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom. I care greatly about mentorship, trainee success and passing along what experiences I can.
To be a proactive mentor, I have conducted informational interviews and published them in a book series, Academia and the World Beyond. In academia, subsequent roles involve responsibilities beyond research analysis–such as teaching, mentorship, and grant writing. Outside of academia. PhD graduates know that a wide range of non-academic career paths exist, but the specifics are nebulous. The purpose of these interviews has been to develop resources to help PhD students understand these range of possibilities.
